For fire pits with round bases, you need to know the diameter of the base.
If you check the web site where you are purchasing your fire pit, you will typically see the size. However, that size almost always refers to the diameter at the top, which is often more than the diameter at the base. In the photo below, the manufacturer, Sunnydaze, has specified the diameter of the base as well as the top. This is extremely rare. Most sites do not provide that information, and you have to guess. It is not a bad idea to order a DeckProtect™ that will be a little larger than the base since heat can radiate from the fire bowl and hit the deck in a slightly larger circle. In the 30” Sunnydaze example, a good size would be a 24” square to be safe.
If your fire pit has a fire bowl that is several inches above the deck, which means there is a lot of room for airflow under the fire bowl, you may get away with a smaller DeckProtect™. In the example below, we used a 16” DeckProtect™. We burned a robust wood fire for about an hour, and there was no damage to the TimberTech deck. Generally, though, we recommend a size big enough for the feet to rest on the basalt inside the frame.
